TIP for easy recycling at home...

Buy a second garbage can and line it with a blue trash bag. Only put in tin cans, bottles, plastics and papers (such as junk mail) in this can. When it’s full, RECYCLE! So easy! You’ll be amazed how much less TRASH you’ll throw away.

Don’t have recycling available onsite at your community? Check nearby schools, churches and libraries for convenient recycle bins or check with your city (or their website) for the nearest recycle drop off site.

Water Bottles - Convenience at a Cost
While you already know it costs more than tap to drink bottled water, did you know what it costs the environment? Less than 20% of water bottles are recycled. And with no regulation on the water quality in those bottles, verses tight City regulation of your tap water, which is really the logical choice? Buy yourself a filter for your faucet, or a filtering water pitcher (such as Brita) and keep it in the refrigerator. Buy a refillable bottle and keep it clean. You’ll save $ and feel better about your contribution to the environment!

Do you have internet access? Go paperless on your bills and pay online!

How to Tips on Greening Your Bathroom

We all use a significant amount of water and power in our bathrooms. So there are plenty of ways to save resources by greening your bathroom! You can also improve your health by using non-toxic cleaners and personal products. Here is a list of 10 ways to embrace a green bathroom:

  1. Save Water and power in the shower. Use a low-flow shower head. Less heated water reduces demand on the hot water heater!
  2. While you are at it, why not take a shorter shower? Want to relax, take a bath.
  3. Use compact fluorescent lighting.
  4. Turn off the sink while you are brushing your teeth.
  5. Get a low-flush toilet. Older versions use 5 times more water than newer ones.
  6. Use green cleaners. Todays non-toxic cleaners work and smell great. And you won’t be breathing in chemical fumes while using them.
  7. Use non-toxic soap, shampoo and conditioners. Remember your skin is your bodies biggest organ and it soaks up whatever chemicals we put on it.
  8. Use eco-friendly towels and textiles. Organic cotton, hemp and now even bamboo-based textiles are better for the earth and a healthier you.
  9. Use organic make-up, lotions and other beauty products to keep your skin clean and healthy, and reduce reaction to perfumes and additives.
  10. Quit using disposable razors. Invest a few more dollars into a nice handle with refillable blades.

You have a voice - use it to ask for onsite recycling...

When you live in an apartment it can be easy to think you don’t have as much control over your immediate environment as you would if you owned your home. Forget that thinking! Apartment residents have a huge impact on the environment, we just have to be a little creative sometimes. Not every city has a recycle plan that allows for pick up at the property, but if you choose to separate your trash, you can drop off those "blue bags" at numerous places in the immediate area. Our office Managers usually know where to direct you.

You have a voice, let it be heard! Change comes as the result of demand. If you want recycling made available to apartment residents, let your City Officials know!
